SimDrive

Your folders, on storage you chose, kept in step.

Two-way sync and backup between your machine and any S3-compatible bucket or OneDrive. Open the folder you always used; SimDrive keeps the copy honest.

If you already use rclone, read this first

rclone is free, excellent, and probably already installed. SimDrive does not claim to beat it on protocols or flags — it will not.

The difference is that rclone is a command somebody has to run. SimDrive is a service that starts with the machine, watches the folders, reacts within seconds of a change, survives a reboot, shows a tray icon when something needs attention, and refuses a deletion that looks like an accident. If you have already wrapped rclone in a cron job, a systemd unit and a Slack alert, you have built most of SimDrive — and you now maintain it.

What it does

It reacts, it does not poll

Save a file and it is on the remote about three seconds later. SimDrive watches the folder and syncs the files that changed, rather than re-reading the whole tree on a timer — which on a large folder is the difference between seconds and half an hour.

Both directions, with conflicts kept

Changes made anywhere arrive everywhere. When the same file changed in two places, SimDrive keeps both copies and names the loser after the machine it came from. Nothing is silently overwritten and nothing needs a decision before it will proceed.

A guard against the bad afternoon

If a pass would delete an implausible share of what it knows about — an unmounted drive, a folder dragged to the wastebasket — it stops and says so instead of mirroring the loss. That refusal is the whole reason to run a sync tool rather than a copy script.

Your storage, your keys

Point it at any S3-compatible bucket or at OneDrive. Credentials are stored on your own machine and never leave it. There is no Simson server in the path: your files go from your disk to your provider.

End-to-end encryption, optional

Turn it on and filenames and contents are encrypted before they leave the machine, so the provider holds ciphertext it cannot read. The passphrase never leaves your computer, which also means we cannot recover it for you.

Ignore rules that work like .gitignore

node_modules, .git, __pycache__ and friends are excluded by default. Add your own globally or per folder, in the syntax you already know.

Where it stores things

SimDrive speaks S3, so it works with the providers people actually pick for backup — and we have no reason to prefer one, because we do not sell storage.

  • Cloudflare R2
  • Wasabi
  • DigitalOcean Spaces

Not Google Drive. Drive is a graph of file ids rather than a tree of paths, which makes faithful two-way sync a different problem from the one SimDrive solves — so we would rather say so than half-support it.

Start with one folder

Point it at something small, watch a pass complete, then add the rest. The first sync moves folder by folder so files start arriving in seconds rather than after a full survey of the remote.
