Connecting SimDrive to

MinIO

Self-hosted object storage on your own server or NAS.

About 30 minutesFree software on hardware you already own. The cost is the server, its disks, and your time — and the copy is only as safe as that server, so keep a second copy somewhere else as well.
1

Run MinIO

One process, one data directory. Docker is the quickest way on any machine; the binary works on Linux directly.

  1. Pick a data directory on the disk that will hold the backups, for example /srv/minio.
  2. Docker: docker run -d --name minio -p 9000:9000 -p 9001:9001 -v /srv/minio:/data -e MINIO_ROOT_USER=admin -e MINIO_ROOT_PASSWORD=a-long-password minio/minio server /data --console-address ":9001"
  3. Binary: download minio for your platform, then run: minio server /srv/minio --console-address ":9001" with the same two environment variables set.
  4. Port 9000 is the S3 API SimDrive talks to; 9001 is the web console.

Recent community builds of MinIO have cut the console back to bucket browsing, and may not ship prebuilt binaries. If a menu below is missing, the mc command-line tool does the same job: mc alias set local http://server:9000 admin a-long-password, then mc mb local/backups and mc admin user add local simdrive a-secret-key.

2

Create a bucket

  1. Open http://your-server:9001 and sign in with the root user and password.
  2. Buckets → Create Bucket. Name it, for example "backups", and create it.
  3. Or from the command line: mc mb local/backups.
3

Create an access key

Do not give SimDrive the root password. A user with a policy for the bucket is a key you can revoke without touching anything else.

  1. Identity → Users → Create User. Name it "simdrive", set a password (this becomes the secret key), and assign the readwrite policy — or a policy you write that names only the bucket.
  2. Or: Access Keys → Create access key, which makes a key pair under the signed-in user; copy the Access Key and Secret Key when they are shown.
  3. Command line: mc admin user add local simdrive a-secret-key, then mc admin policy attach local readwrite --user simdrive.
4

Reach it from outside the LAN, if you need to

  1. On a home or office network, http://server-name:9000 is fine as it is.
  2. From anywhere else, do not open port 9000 to the internet. Use a VPN (Tailscale is the least effort), or put a reverse proxy with a certificate in front — Caddy issues one automatically — and give SimDrive the https:// address.
5

Enter it in SimDrive

  1. Settings → Storage → Connect storage → MinIO.
  2. Endpoint: http://your-server:9000, or the https:// address of your proxy.
  3. Access key and Secret key: the user's name and password, or the key pair you created.
  4. Path-style addressing is already set for MinIO; a bare address cannot carry the bucket in the hostname.
  5. Click Connect, then Choose folders to back up.

What to enter in SimDrive

Endpointhttp://your-server:9000, or your proxy's https:// address
Access keyThe MinIO user name, or a created access key
Secret keyThat user's password, or the created secret
BucketChosen from the list

In SimDrive: Settings → Storage → Connect storage → MinIO, or the MinIO tile on the Get started screen of a new install. Keys and sign-ins are stored on your machine only and never reach us.

If it goes wrong

The endpoint could not be reached
The port is wrong (9001 is the console; SimDrive wants 9000), a firewall is in the way, or the server name does not resolve from this machine. Try the address in a browser first: it should answer, even if only with an XML error.
Access denied
The user has no policy. Attach readwrite, or a policy naming the bucket.
It worked on the LAN and stopped working from outside
Expected — port 9000 is not reachable from the internet, and should not be. Use a VPN or a reverse proxy, and update the endpoint with Edit keys.

These steps were last walked through in the MinIO console on 2026-09-12. Consoles move their menus; if a name above has changed, the thing to look for is the same. Tell us at support@simsondesk.com and we will update the page.
