Connecting SimDrive to

Other S3-compatible storage

Anything that speaks the S3 protocol: Hetzner, OVH, IDrive e2, Storj, Garage, a NAS.

About 15 minutesDepends on the provider. Look for the storage price, the download price and any minimum retention period before choosing.
1

Find the three facts SimDrive needs

Every S3-compatible service is set up the same way; only the menu names differ. The provider's documentation for "S3 clients", "rclone" or "s3cmd" has all of them on one page.

  1. The endpoint: a hostname such as s3.example.com or https://s3.eu-central-1.example. If the documentation shows it with your bucket name in front, drop the bucket part — SimDrive adds it.
  2. The region: whatever the documentation says, or us-east-1 when it says nothing. The protocol insists on one even where it means nothing.
  3. Whether requests are path-style: if the documentation shows the bucket in the URL path (endpoint/bucket/file) rather than the hostname (bucket.endpoint/file), turn path-style on.
2

Create a bucket and a key

  1. In the provider's console, create a bucket and note its region.
  2. Create an access key — usually under Access Keys, API keys, or Credentials — with read and write access to that bucket.
  3. Copy the key id and the secret when they are shown; the secret usually cannot be retrieved again.
3

Enter it in SimDrive

  1. Settings → Storage → Connect storage → Other S3-compatible.
  2. Endpoint, Region, and the Path-style checkbox from the facts above.
  3. Access key ID and Secret access key: the pair you copied.
  4. Click Connect. If the service refuses the check, use Edit keys to correct and try again; the connection is kept between attempts.

What to enter in SimDrive

EndpointThe S3 hostname from the provider's documentation
RegionAs documented, or us-east-1
Path-styleOn if the bucket goes in the URL path
Access key ID / Secret access keyFrom the provider's key page

In SimDrive: Settings → Storage → Connect storage → Other S3-compatible storage, or the Other S3-compatible storage tile on the Get started screen of a new install. Keys and sign-ins are stored on your machine only and never reach us.

If it goes wrong

The endpoint could not be reached
Try the address in a browser first. It should answer, even if only with an XML error; if it does not, the hostname or port is wrong.
The bucket name ends up in the wrong place, or every request is denied
Toggle path-style. Self-hosted services on a bare address or IP need it on; most hosted ones need it off.

These steps were last walked through in the Other S3-compatible storage console on 2026-09-12. Consoles move their menus; if a name above has changed, the thing to look for is the same. Tell us at support@simsondesk.com and we will update the page.
