Connecting SimDrive to

DigitalOcean Spaces

Simple object storage in DigitalOcean datacentres, one flat monthly fee.

Create the account

  1. Sign up at cloud.digitalocean.com and verify the email address and a payment method.

Create a Space

DigitalOcean calls a bucket a Space.

  1. In the left menu open Spaces Object Storage and click Create Spaces Bucket.
  2. Choose a datacenter region — the short code, such as nyc3, ams3 or sgp1, is what SimDrive needs.
  3. Give it a unique name, leave the file listing Restricted, and create it.

Generate a Spaces key

Spaces keys are separate from the personal API tokens used for droplets.

  1. Open API in the left menu, then the Spaces Keys tab.
  2. Click Generate New Key, name it after the machine, and choose whether it may reach all buckets or only this one.
  3. Copy the Access Key and the Secret Key. The secret is shown once.

Enter it in SimDrive

  1. Settings → Storage → Connect storage → DigitalOcean Spaces.
  2. Region: the datacenter code, such as nyc3.
  3. Access key and Secret key: the pair you copied.
  4. Click Connect, then Choose folders to back up.

In SimDrive: Settings → Storage → Connect storage → DigitalOcean Spaces, or the DigitalOcean Spaces tile on the Get started screen of a new install. Keys and sign-ins are stored on your machine only and never reach us.

If it goes wrong

The endpoint could not be reached
The region code is not the one the Space is in. It is in the Space's own endpoint, e.g. nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com.
Access denied
A personal access token was used instead of a Spaces key. Generate one under API → Spaces Keys.

These steps were last walked through in the DigitalOcean Spaces console on 2026-09-12. Consoles move their menus; if a name above has changed, the thing to look for is the same. Tell us at support@simsondesk.com and we will update the page.
